The coast road north. Everything on this stretch is within an hour of everything else.
Quick answer
Taghazout for the most life and the shortest walk to a wave. Tamraght if you are learning, travelling as a family, or staying a while — it is quieter, cheaper and has a sandy beach break. Imsouane only if you longboard and want one very long right. If you cannot decide, base in Tamraght and drive; it is ten minutes to Taghazout.
The short version
| Taghazout | Tamraght | Imsouane | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | Busy surf village | Quieter, more local | Remote fishing village |
| Best for | First-timers who want company | Longer stays, families, budget | Longboarders and long rides |
| Waves on the doorstep | Points, rock bottom | Beach breaks, sand | One very long right |
| Beginner-friendly | Not from the village itself | Yes, genuinely | Yes, in the bay |
| Food and cafes | Most choice | Decent and cheaper | Limited |
| Nightlife | Some | Very little | None |
| From Agadir airport | ~45 min | ~40 min | ~1 hr 30 |
Taghazout
The name everyone knows, and the busiest of the three. Blue and white houses, cafes on the front, surf shops on every corner, and Hash Point breaking a two-minute walk from most accommodation.
Choose it if you want people to meet, the most choice of food, and the shortest walk to a wave. Skip it if you want quiet, or if you are a complete beginner — the waves directly in front of the village break over rock and are not where you should learn.
Tamraght
Ten minutes south, and a genuinely different place. Fewer surf shops, more ordinary Moroccan village life, cheaper accommodation and food, and Devil’s Rock — a sandy beach break — on the doorstep.
Choose it if you are learning, travelling as a family, staying more than a week, or on a budget. Skip it if you want a scene; there is very little to do at night.
This is the one I recommend most often to people who ask, and almost nobody arrives having considered it.
Imsouane
An hour and a half north, past the Timlalin dunes, down a long road to a fishing harbour. It has one of the longest right-hand waves in Morocco in The Bay, and very little else.
Choose it if you longboard, or you want one extraordinary wave and do not care about anything else. Skip it if you want variety — when The Bay is not working, your options are limited and you are a long way from anywhere.
So which one?
- First surf trip, want to meet people: Taghazout, and take lessons at Panorama or Devil’s Rock.
- Complete beginner, family, or a longer stay: Tamraght.
- Longboarder: Imsouane, or Taghazout with a day trip up there.
- Intermediate chasing points: Taghazout, and use a guide to move between spots.
- Cannot decide: base in Tamraght and drive up. It is ten minutes, and you get the quiet plus the access.
Realistically, the three are close enough that where you sleep matters less than whether you are willing to move during the day. Everything on this stretch is within an hour of everything else.
