I’m Reda. I’ll be the one in the water with you.

I was born in Mirleft, down the coast, and grew up in the Taghazout area. I have been surfing for more than 14 years and teaching for more than 4. Before I taught surfing I worked as a lifeguard, which is the part of my background I think matters most to a nervous beginner: I spent years being responsible for people in water they did not fully understand.

I am certified by the Royal Moroccan Surfing Federation. That matters less than the fourteen years, but it means the way I teach is not improvised.

What growing up here actually changes

Anyone can read a forecast. The thing you cannot get from an app is knowing that on a given morning, with a certain swell direction and the tide doing what it is doing, one specific spot along this stretch will be good and the rest will be a waste of your session.

There are roughly thirty breaks within fifty kilometres of here. Most days, most of them are wrong. Knowing which one is right — and being willing to drive you there rather than teach you in front of wherever the school van happens to be parked — is the whole job. That is also what surf guiding is, for surfers who already stand up.

Languages I teach in

I teach in English, French, Arabic and Berber (Tamazight), and I get by in German. This is not a small detail. Learning to surf involves someone shouting instructions at you over breaking water while you are slightly frightened, and it goes considerably better in your own language.

Complete beginners are the majority and the part of the job I like most — there is a specific face people make on their first green wave and it does not get old. But the same knowledge that puts a first-timer on the right whitewater also puts an intermediate on the right point on the right tide.

If you have never stood on a board, start with a beginner surf lesson in Taghazout. If you want the whole session built around you, take a private lesson. If you are travelling as a family or a group of friends, a private group lesson keeps it to just your people. And if you already surf and simply want to be taken to the right wave each day, that is surf guiding.
